As an advocate for more than 200 yeshivot and
day schools, the BJE's Government Relations Team helps school
administrators: comply with government rules, regulations,
and requirements, apply for entitlements, and be made aware
of the latest educational developments and opportunities.
BJE also guides in the spending of government allocated funds
for library and resource materials in general studies curricula.
Representing Jewish education programs, issues, and concerns,
the GR Team members serve on several committees including:
- National Leadership of Private Education,
- U.S. Department
of Education Commissioner's Advisory Council for
Nonpublic School Education and Special Education
Services,
- N.Y. State
Department of
Education Committee of Non-Public School Officials,
- N.Y. City
Department of Education Office on Special Education
and Rehabilitation Services (OSERS),
- U.S. Department of Education.
The GR Team contributed to the development of the regulations
associated with Public Law 105-17 (IDEA), negotiated with
New York State for yeshivot to have on-site special education
services, and helped prepare Jewish schools for changes in
Regents tests. Following a Federal District Court decision
in the Russman Case, the GR Team negotiated with New York
City for yeshivot to have special education remedial services
on-site. The GR Team lobbied hard for the U.S. Supreme Court
overturning of the Aguilar vs. Felton ruling which barred
public school teachers from teaching remedial classes in
parochial schools.
